University or Career College – Which Should You Attend?
When deciding on the right post-secondary path for you, one decision you will need to face is whether or not to pursue a degree from a university or to complete your training at a career college. There are several factors you should take under consideration in order to determine which is right for you.
Consider Education Versus Training
The mindset of the education you receive at a university versus a career college is somewhat different. While a university or traditional college both focus on providing you with an education that will help you become a well-rounded person with specialized training, a career college focuses more on the training it takes to pursue a certain type of job.
Think About the Time Factor
Since a career college focuses on giving you the training you need to start down your career path and does not require courses that make you a more “well-rounded” and educated person, the degree and certification programs are usually much shorter than pursuing a degree at a university. Therefore, if time is of the essence for you and you want to complete your training as quickly as possible, a career college may be the better choice for you.
Take a Look at Your Grades
When it comes to your high school academic performance, a career college generally puts less emphasis on how well you did. This is not to say that a university education is only for “smart” people and a career college is only for that that couldn’t make it in high school. On the contrary, many brilliant people attend a career college and many people that did not do well in high school find success in college. At the same time, if your grades were less than stellar and you don’t have the time to take the prep courses required to get accepted into a university program, you might want to pursue your training at a career college.
Deciding between a university education or going to a career college is a personal choice. Either way, completing a program in your area of interest is the first important step you can take toward opening up a world of new possibilities.
