How Online College Classes Work
If you have been hearing all the buzz about online college classes, you may find yourself wondering just how online classes work. After all, if you grew up in a generation before computers were a part of our every day lives, the concept of taking classes online may seem completely foreign to you. The truth is, online classes are growing in popularity and the options for earning degrees online are continually growing.
When enrolling in online classes, it is important to note that not all online classes work the same. Some online classes simply provide you with text online that you are responsible for reading and for answering questions on. Other online classes are set up to be more interactive, with some even delivering the instructor’s lecture over the Internet.
The majority of online classes, however, fall somewhere in between these two extremes. With most classes, you will be provided with a syllabus and either an online text or information regarding the text you will need to purchase. Usually, classes are conducted using a combination of both types of text.
The classroom instructor will then facilitate discussion with you and your online peers. Usually, every student in the class receives log-in information. Then, as your schedule permits, you can post comments on your classroom discussion board. In many cases, you are required to post a certain number of comments in order to obtain a higher grade. In this way, your class can successfully create an ongoing dialogue of sharing and helping, just as in a brick and mortar classroom.
As with a brick and mortar classroom, you may receive homework assignments as well. Some instructors ask that you post these assignments, particularly writing assignments, within the discussion area so you and your classroom peers can carry on a discussion about the assignment. In other cases, you may take a short quiz or other assignment while online.
While taking online classes allows for more flexibility than taking classes in a brick and mortar institution, you will still be expected to meet certain deadlines. Usually, you will know about upcoming assignments and their due dates from the very beginning, so you can work ahead if desired. In this way, if you know you will be away for a period of time, you can have assignments completed without worry about falling behind when you return.
Online classes work very much like traditional classes. You still have an instructor that facilitates discussions with you and your classmates. You still have tests and assignments. You still receive a grade and are expected to participate. The only difference is that it all takes place within the convenience of an online environment.
