Career Tips: How to get a New Career
Ok, so you’re sitting at your desk, playing with the little make-shift voodoo doll you’ve made of your boss and looking up at the clock that reads 5:15, bearing down for another late night at the office. It’s obviously time to find a new career. But how? Let’s take a look at some helpful career tips:
• Career Tip 1: Get control of thing. If you are in a career because the family is expecting you to do so, yet you have no interest in it, take a look at yourself. Is this job what you saw yourself doing so long ago? What are the things that define you and make you happy?
• Career Tip 2: Find your passion. Choose something you enjoy, but won’t end up hating doing it full time. A helpful tip on choosing a new career here is to look at your passions. Think of at least three careers for each passion and list the pros and cons within each one.
• Career Tip 3: Get some experience. Once you’ve redefined your passions, or loves in life, try a part time job or perhaps even volunteer in that field. Even something as minimal as ten hours a week will let you know if that career is one you wish to chase.
• Career Tip 4: Go back to school. A great way for helping to find a new career is going back to school. Whether it be a trade school, cooking school, or even part time at a university. Learning will once again open your mind to perhaps some lost interests. If you like animation, take some introductory courses at a community college. If you like organic gardening, look to your local nurseries to see if they need volunteer help or offer organics seminars. Wherever you live, there are always options for learning.
• Career Tip 5: Decide what level you want. Ok, so you’ve found your passion, and a job within that passion that won’t drive you insane after a five-year employment period. Decide how far you want to go in your new career: manager, owner, entrepreneur? A great career tip here is to decide just how far you want to go, and then focus on that goal.
• Career Tip 6: Network and socialize – Now, you’re volunteering in your passion and you have decided how far you want to go, and now what…? Talk. Talk is cheap and it is a great means to find out who is hiring and the best career option for you. Network with other members within your group. Think of networking as an oral resume. Wet appetites, without feeding prospects an entire meal. Give a little, but not too much, and you will open yourself to receiving a great deal more towards a new career.
• Career Tip 7: Keep going – It may take a while so this career tip is the most important. Don’t give up. If this is something you want to do, then don’t let anyone – including yourself – keep you from doing it. Just keep going and you will obtain your goal.
Take the next step towards a better career. Find a school near you with the programs that interest you.
