Online Degrees – Are They Respected?
Years ago, the only way to earn an advanced degree was to attend classes at a college or university. Since the rise of the Internet, online degrees have become an increasingly popular alternate option.
Many people choose to pursue an online degree because of their demanding work schedules, which do not allow for regular class time. Or, they choose to take these classes because they are home taking care of children during traditional class hours. An online degree is a wonderful way to get an education in the comfort of home and during hours that are convenient. Still, the worry persists: Are online degrees respected?
Thankfully, there is no need to worry. Not only is an online degree respected, it is not any different from the diploma that is received by a student who attends college in person. The required standards for an advanced degree are the same for students who attend class at a brick and mortar institution as they are for those who study online.
According to studies conducted by the U.S. Office of Technology Assessment, online students fare as well or better than traditional students in both courses and exams. As for the prevailing views in the corporate world, many human resources executives believe that students capable of participating in online courses after their usual working hours are actually demonstrating their resourcefulness and ambition – both of which are considered to be an asset in any workplace.
When choosing a school to study toward an online degree, it is important to select an accredited college or university with a reputation for academic excellence. Employers will respect a degree from a great school regardless of if it is a traditional or an online degree. In addition, there is no way anyone looking at a college diploma can determine whether it was earned in a traditional class or online. Those who choose to pursue an online degree can rest assured that their diploma will be respected in both the academic and the business world.
