X-Ray Technology - Become an X-Ray Technologist

x-ray technician college studentA broken limb, an odd pain in the abdomen, something seems odd with your lungs…and the doctor thinks perhaps an x-ray is in order to see what is going on in there. As you enter the room, an X-ray Technologist is there. The technologist instructs you on how to sit and then protects your body with protective gear.

After all is said and done, an amazing image is created showing the insides of your body. Perhaps, even as you’ve had the process done to you, you’ve wondered how could you become an X-ray Technologist. It is a career with a rewarding pay that also provides a great service towards the medical profession.

To become an X-ray Technologist, there is a certain path to follow:

• Enroll in a certified X-ray technology school, one that is accredited by the state and perhaps regional medical boards.
o Typical courses will include: anatomy, physiology, patient care procedures, radiation physics, radiation protection, radiobiology and pathology
• School courses expose students to not only procedural operations, but also safe handling and disposal of radioactive materials
• Aside from school courses, X-ray Technology students will often be assigned to field work, or a supplementary program working in a local facility alongside registered and certified X-ray Technologists
• While working with medical professionals and during studies, X-ray Technologist students will also be instructed in ethical treatment of patients, imaging principles for the best exposure with the minimal amount of exposing a patient to X-rays, and how to best position and handle patients (particularly those with an impairment) while performing the procedure.
• Programs vary from region to region, and state to state and may take anywhere from one year to four years to complete

As with much of the medical field, there is an increasing need for X-ray Technologists. A projected forecast states that until the year 2012, there will be a continual need, meaning lots of job opportunities for those who want to enter this very technical and medically supportive career. Reasonably good wages and high end insurance also make this a profession one to be considered if you are looking to enter the medical field.
