Mechanical Engineering Employment Opportunities

A person with a mechanical engineering degree is qualified to work as a mechanical engineering technician. In this position, the engineer helps design and develop equipment and products to be used in industrial manufacturing. They are also responsible for testing these products for efficiency and reliability. Mechanical engineers also create sketches of their designs and rough layouts as well as recording and analyzing data. In order to create these designs, they must record and analyze the data and make calculations. As a part of their duties, mechanical engineers also estimate the costs of labor and the life expectancy of equipment. Yet others test and inspect equipment and machines or work in cooperation with other engineers in order to troubleshoot and eliminate problems with production.

Mechanical Engineering Job Outlook and Salary

According to the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment opportunities for those with a mechanical engineering degree should grow about as fast as the average occupation over the next several years. The need for mechanical engineers will continue to grow as companies need to improve and make updates to their facilities. The Bureau reports that the median annual salary for mechanical engineering technicians in May 2004 was $43,400.
