Western Governors University – proud, private, and online!

This is probably one of the coolest schools ever. WGU is a private online school with an incredible reputation for excellence. Based in Salt Lake City, Western Governors University is setting the standard for distance-education. Time Magazine recently featured WGU in a great article.

According to this article, around 4 million Americans choose to expand their education and career potential by enrolling in online school.

    Hi!

As an online student at WGU (I finished my BS degree there, and am almost finished with my MS in Special Education), I can vouch for the quality of the education available at WGU.

I’ve been to four traditional colleges in Arkansas. From two traditional colleges, I earned over 100 credit hours. I also have taken an online class from one of them that was excellent, and from two others that were not very well presented. One of those was a Graduate level course I was really disappointed with.

As for WGU, nothing I have taken in traditional colleges compares to the amount I have learned at WGU, because it maintains extremely high standards for its students. There is no such thing as passing a course (or an assignment) with average grades. If you don’t get it right the first time, you do it over until you get it right.

For this reason, many students at WGU study really hard to get it right the first time, and may be able to advance their studies more quickly. Those students who don’t get it right the first time may not finish as fast, but they do have the opportunity to work on a paper or a project until they do get it right without (for the most part) being penalized. In some instances, there may be a fee for a test retake if you don’t pass it the first couple of tries.

It takes a lot of work and dedication to complete a degree at WGU, unless you already have an excellent and broad background in your field, in which case you might be able complete assignments with less study. If you are under the misconception that WGU, as an online college, will be easier than other colleges, and you think you can coast through, then you are definitely barking up the wrong tree .

Other than that, if you want to be able to finish college without driving a million miles like I would have to (I live in a really remote area), and you’re willing to work hard to learn a lot, WGU is a wonderful choice!
