5 Tips to Help You Earn Your Degree “At Home”

So you want to take an online course and earn your degree. With today’s technology and, of course, the Internet, distance-learning has never been easier. Many courses not only provide you with the text-books, online social network to communicate with your virtual classmates, and outstanding online instruction, they make it fun, interesting, and engaging. What do you have to bring to the table? You have to bring the willingness to focus, study, and reach your potential. Unfortunately, some people have trouble finding the discipline to make it happen. Don’t worry – all it really takes are a few simple lifestyle adjustments.

If you are considering taking a college course at home, here are some tips to help you make the most out of this unique learning opportunity:

1.Take it Serious. You need to know that just because you are working on your course at home, the work isn’t going to get done by itself. You will need to physically sit down, read your homework, do the assignments, meet deadlines, and participate in whatever online study sessions are necessary.

2.Manage Your Time Wisely. If you have a full-time or part-time job, or have a busy family and/or social schedule, you will need to schedule in some time to work on your studies on a daily basis. Some people block out a few hours in the evenings after the kids are in bed. Others use their lunch-hour or weekends to catch up on their study. Whatever your situation is, your classes are now a part of your daily to-do list and should be a priority.

3.Create a Work Space. If you do not have the luxury of an at-home office, you may want to create a work space at home. A desk in the basement, a corner of your living room, or even a corner of the kitchen can be set up to be your study center. Avoid using your kitchen table because it may disrupt your family and your entertaining plans , and you will need
to keep moving your “school stuff”. If you can’t find room at home, consider working at the library.

4.Reduce Distractions. We all love the idea of working in our pajamas while music or the TV is playing, but the truth is that distractions will not do you any favors when you are trying to earn your degree. Take your work and study time serious, avoid chatting with friends on the phone, put the cat out, turn off the television and focus.

5.Get and Stay Organized. Keeping your assignments, homework, paper, supplies, books and notes all in one place and accessible is important. Setting up a bookshelf for all of your materials is helpful, as is a small filing cabinet for your papers. A clutter-free environment means a clutter-free mind.

Take advantage of online courses and distance-learning opportunities. When you can work on creating the future you dream of in the luxury of your own home or at work, without having to quit your job to go back to school, you have your whole future in your hands.
