Considering a Career? Consider Becoming a Dialysis Technician
The healthcare field is still growing, and opportunities to specialize are always available. One of the most interesting areas in healthcare is in dialysis.
Dialysis technicians, also known as hemodialysis technicians or renal dialysis technician, specialize in the care of patients with limited to no kidney function. The dialysis techs are trained in the operation of machines used by patients to remove waste, excess salt, and water from the blood stream. They also prepare patients for dialysis treatments which typically last approximately four hours, three times per week, and monitor both the patient and the machine operations through out the treatment.
An important aspect of this job is the care and understanding of those patients going through dialysis treatment. For many patients this treatment brings with it various feelings, including anxiety and depression. A caring disposition is important as the dialysis technician needs to take and record patients’ vital signs such as their pulse rates, cleanse catheter access areas, and explain various procedures. An attention to detail is also important as fluid removal and replacements during the procedures are also calculated, as well as equipment settings and more.
While most dialysis treatments take place in hospitals, many take place in private clinics and, at times, in patients’ homes. Dialysis technicians earn their certification through colleges, vocational schools and universities. While entry-level positions are available, it is definitely possible to advance in this field with further training.
With a genuine caring aptitude and a willingness to learn, you can become a dialysis technician in no time.
