Selling Yourself to an Employer

The process of learning how to interview for a job is like riding a bicycle—once you learn the basics, it’s easy to repeat! Getting that college degree is the first step into landing that perfect job. Now all you have to do is learn how to sell yourself to a potential employer! Browse through our interview preparation guide to find out how you can stand out from the crowd—

Do your homework before the interview
Do a little research about the company before your interview so that you can appear well-informed about what the company actually does! Poke around on their website and find some questions that you can ask your interviewer about the company.

Be prepared to answer questions.
No matter where you interview, you will be asked a few standard questions. Employers often ask questions like “what’s your greatest strength and weakness?” and “can you describe a typical work week?”. If you’re asked a question about your negative traits, try to turn it around into something positive.

First impressions are the key to success
The first ten seconds of your interview are key! When you step into the room, the only thing that an interviewer knows about you is your appearance. So, dress for success! When you’re asking yourself the eternal question of “what should I wear?”, here are some quick answers–

Men:
• Wear a well tailored suit in black, blue or grey
• Wear a matching tie in a simple pattern
• Polished shoes
• Keep your hair clean and not too long
• Remove any piercings

Women:
• Wear a neutral color such as black, navy blue, or grey
• Skirts should not be too short, about knee length is desirable
• Avoid any low-cut shirts
• Wear comfortable, but stylish shoes. If you can’t walk in your heels, don’t wear them!
• Keep jewelry simple
• Keep makeup natural and polished looking
• Avoid strong perfume

Stay focused during the interview
Don’t forget that you’re trying to sell yourself! Use your education to your advantage and let the interviewer know what skills you have obtained from college. Make sure that you maintain eye contact and definitely avoid fidgeting!

Exit on a high note
Make sure you prepare a list of questions to ask an interviewer. The more thoughtful questions you ask about the job and the company, the more interest you express in the position. If the interviewer did not previously present you with his business card, ask him for one so that you will be able to send a thank-you letter. Sending a thank-you card or a follow-up letter a day or two after your interview will remind the interviewer that you are still very interested in the position.

Happy interviewing!
