4 Tips for Working While Attending School

Do you plan to go back to college while working at the same time? Trying to juggle work with school can be a quite a challenge, as you simply cannot provide your full attention to work and school at the same time. Of course, you don’t want either aspect of your life to suffer. Therefore, it is important for you to follow these four tips in order to increase your chances of successfully attending school while still holding down a job.

Tip #1: Talk it Over with Your Employer

The first thing you should do before heading back to college is to discuss your plans with your employer. Your employer may be willing to make some changes to your schedule or to provide other forms of assistance. In fact, your employer may even have a school reimbursement program that will help you pay for your college expenses.

By discussing your plans with your employer, he or she may be willing to shorten your hours or even let you complete some of your work from home. Or, if it will help, you may be able to work longer hours four days per week so you can have three days off. Of course, some jobs will offer more flexibility than others. Nonetheless, by discussing your plans with your employer, you may be able to brainstorm ways to make the educational process easier for you.

Tip #2: Attend Part Time

In order to make certain you can handle the workload, you may also want to consider attending school on a part time basis. Sure, it will take you a little longer to graduate, but attending part time is better than pushing yourself to attend full time and then getting burned out in the process. Besides, after you get that first semester under your belt, you should be able to better determine whether or not you can handle taking a heavier load.

Tip #3: Consider Attending an Online School

You might also want to consider attending an online school rather than a brick and mortar institution. There are many advantages to attending an online school, including the fact that you can save time because you don’t have to travel and the fact that you can attend classes at whatever time is convenient for you. Although there are certain limits to the degrees that can be earned online, you might be surprised by the degrees that are available.

Tip #4: Make Time for Yourself

One of the biggest problems with attending school while working is the fact that you can get burned out rather quickly. If all of your time is devoted to either work or to school, you will certainly experience this burn out. Make certain to build time into your week to enjoy spending time with family, to do things you enjoy and to get enough sleep each night. That way, your performance will not suffer at work or at school.
