Things to Consider When Choosing College Classes

Are you trying to decide which classes you need to take when you head back to college? If you are pursuing a specific degree, you will have a set list of classes that you are required to complete in order to earn your degree. Still, it is up to you to decide the order in which you will take those classes. When determining the order for your coursework, there are several things you should keep in mind in order to give yourself the best chance of successfully completing your degree program.

Your Skill Level

One factor you should consider when choosing your college classes is your skill level. If you are required to take calculus, but you still are not comfortable with algebra, you will should certainly take an algebra class before you try to take on calculus. At most colleges and universities, you will be required to take a test before you start taking any classes so you can determine your proper placement in classes such as math and english classes. While it may be frustrating to take classes that do not actually apply toward you degree, you will experience far less difficulty with those classes if you lay down a good base before you start taking the more difficult classes.

Your Interests

You should also consider your personal interests when deciding upon the classes you will take. If you are taking a couple classes at a time or if you are attending college full time, for example, you might want to create a schedule that allows you to take a class that greatly interests you along with one that you do not find quite so interesting. By taking these classes at the same time, you may feel less frustrated or overwhelmed by the class that you are not so interested in. In other words, if you feel as if you can easily “coast” through one class, it will allow you dedicate more time toward the class you are less interested in or that you do not feel as confident about.

Prerequisites

You will also need to look closely at the prerequisites for the classes you are taking. In many cases, there will be classes that you need to take before you can take other classes that you are interested in or classes that you have to take. In order to make certain you get your prerequisites taken care of so you can stay on schedule, you should look at all of the classes you are required to take or all of the classes you are interested in taking and write down the prerequisites. If you are following a particular program of study, the college or university will likely provide you with a checklist of classes that you need to take and will list the prerequisites necessary for each class. But, you will also need to choose the elective courses you are interested in taking as well. So, take a look at all of your elective options and decide which ones you are interested in taking so can make a list of those prerequisites as well.
