President Obama on Nurses

Are you interested in becoming a health care professional? To be specific, do you think that a career nursing might be an exciting and rewarding job? If so, they you probably agree with President Barack Obama, who said some very kind words about the nurses of America.

In a White House town-hall meeting last week, President Obama discussed some very personal matters. When Sasha Obama, the President’s 7 year-old daughter, was diagnosed with life-threatening meningitis at just three months old, she was sent directly to the hospital.

Responding to a question from the audience, the President said, “The doctors did a terrific job, but frankly it was the nurses that were there with us when she had to get a spinal tap, and all sorts of things that were just bringing me to tears.”

The result was that Sasha was saved from the potentially life-threatening disease and she got better. President Obama had great appreciation for the RNs, stating “I’m biased toward nurses,” he said. “I just like nurses.” Obama went on to describe nurses as the backbone of the country’s health care system, suggesting that they are highly unappreciated.

For those of you who are considering a career in nursing, there really is no better time than the present to start getting that health care education! During the town-hall meeting, the President said that nurses are playing an important role in establishing the country’s health care policy, despite the fact that there is a troubling shortage of nurses during this time of increasing unemployment.
