6 Tips for Making the College Application Process Simpler
Filling out college applications may seem like a somewhat daunting task at first, particularly if you are planning to apply to several different colleges and you have multiple applications to complete. After all, you don’t want to cut any corners and send in an application that is sub-par. At the same time, filling out all of the applications can be a bit time consuming and stressful. Therefore, it is a good idea to get organized before you get started and to sit down and take care of all of the applications at once. This way, you can be certain to get all of your applications filled out completely and accurately. By following these college application organizational tips, you will also make the process as simple as possible.
Tip #1: Streamline the Forms
Many colleges will allow you to fill out a common application form, which can then be submitted to multiple colleges. So, find out which ones allow you to complete a common application and which ones require a specific form. Regardless, gather all of the forms you need from the colleges you are interested in attending.
Tip #2: Letters of Recommendation
Before you begin gathering all of the other paperwork and information needed for your college application, contact a couple different teachers, coaches, employers or other acquaintances and ask them to write letters of recommendation on your behalf. This way, you will have the letters prepared and ready to send along with your applications.
Tip #3: Essay
Most college applications will require an essay of some form. Read through the essay requirements of all of the schools you are considering attending. Then, begin composing the essays right away. This way, you can set the essay aside for a few weeks and then re-read it before sending it, which will make it easier for you to notice mistakes or any other changes that you may need to make.
Tip #4: High School Transcripts
Next, it is time to order copies of your high school transcripts. While many high schools will send out copies of your transcripts for free, others will charge a nominal fee for each transcript you need. Yet others will discount the price if you are ordering several transcripts at one time. So, once you determine the schools you are interested in attending, contact the high school from which you graduated and request your transcripts be sent directly to the schools of your choice.
Tip #5: Send In Your Scores
Most colleges will require SAT scores as part of the admission process. When you take your test, be certain to request that your scores be sent to the colleges you are interested in attending. If you want to wait until after you receive your scores so you can retake the test for a better score if necessary, you will need to complete additional paperwork later in order to request that your scores be sent to the colleges of your choice.
Tip #6: Meet the Deadlines
Don’t wait until the last minute to get your applications sent off. Your goal should be to get your applications in well before the deadline. Not only will this demonstrate your sense of responsibility, it will also help ensure your application gets in on time even if there are some issues with the postage, delivery or other factors that are beyond your control.
