Do You Need to Take the SAT?
Whether you are a high school student or an adult who is heading back to school, getting all of the proper paperwork organized to head off to college can be a bit confusing and overwhelming. Among the many things you have to pull together – including college applications, letters of recommendation and personal essays – you may also need to take the SAT in order to send your scores off to the college. But, did you know that it may not be necessary for you to take the SAT?
The Standard of Quality
Since the SAT has been around for over one hundred years and has been used by colleges throughout the country to help determine who is accepted and who is not accepted into the school, many people automatically assume that taking the SAT is a requirement for getting into any college. The reality is that there are some colleges that do not require you to take any kind of special testing before you will be accepted into the program, while others may have subject-specific testing that they require rather than the SAT. In addition, if you have taken the ACT, the college of your choice may take those test results rather than requiring you to take the SAT in order to be considered for admissions.
Checking with the School
The reality is that you should look at the admissions requirements of the college you are considering attending before you assume that you need to take the SAT. On the other hand, if you aren’t certain of the college you will be attending, taking the SAT is a good idea. Since the SAT is the most widely used test for college admissions, you are almost guaranteed that it will be accepted if the college of your choice requires some form of standardized testing for admission. In addition, if you are a high school student, taking your SAT now while much of the content is still fresh in your mind may beneficial even if you don’t plan to go to college for another couple years.
Enjoying the Benefits of the SAT
In addition to helping you meet college admission requirements, there are other benefits associated with taking the SAT as well. For example, once you register for the test, you can access to valuable financial aid and scholarship information. You also gain access to helpful tools that you can use when searching for a college or when trying to select the major you might be interested in.
Another benefit to taking the SAT is that it is a good predictor of how successful you will be in college. By looking at your scores and the requirements for the colleges you are interested in attending, you can be certain to select a college that will provide you with the challenge you need to take your education to the next level without being overly demanding or difficult for you to complete.
The reality is that you really have nothing to lose by taking the SAT, except for the fees that are associated with taking the test. Therefore, if your budget can afford for you to take the test, it is a good idea to take it even if it is not truly necessary. If you are tight on funds, on the other hand, check with the college you wish to attend before taking the test because it may not be a requirement.
