Why Learn a Second Language?
I can remember when my parents signed me up for French class. I was in sixth grade and had no clue about what I would encounter. Would I have to wear a beret? Would my teacher be mean and laugh at my terrible attempts to speak the language? It turned out that we didn’t have to wear berets and my teacher was as sweet as pie. From that day forward, I developed a deep appreciation for foreign languages. I even added a couple more language classes to my class schedules over the years. I may not be able to speak French, Spanish or Latin, but I really do appreciate those classes.
Learning a foreign language is not a bad thing. In fact, it can help open many doors. For one, learning a new language allows you to explore a different culture. You gain a new understanding as to why different cultures embrace certain traditions. This may also help erase any preconceived notions that you may have.
Knowledge of a foreign language can also be valuable in the workplace. Employers need workers who are equipped to work in the global market. Knowledge of a foreign language can make you more attractive to potential employers.
Learning a foreign language could be the key to keeping your mind sharp. According to Life123.com*, “Both right- and left-brain sides are stimulated during learning language when language education is done in an experiential environment. The more parts of the brain are involved in learning, the longer the learning is retained, and the more the brain is taught to use the new information.”
Last but not least, if you plan to study abroad, knowing a foreign language will definitely come in handy. It can help break down cultural barriers and help you get along with the locals much better.
