Online Schools Vs. Ground Campus Schools
If you are thinking about heading back to college, congratulations are certainly in order! Whether you are pursuing a new degree or simply want to take a few refresher courses, going back to college is a wonderful experience that can open up many new opportunities for your future. Of course, before you can start hitting the books, you will first need to decide which college you will attend – and the first decision in that process is determining whether you want to attend an online school or a ground campus school.
To help you decide between an online school and a ground campus school, you should thoroughly explore the pros and cons of each. Here is a look at a few of the things you should consider when deciding between the two options.
Your Schedule
Your schedule is one of the most important factors to consider when deciding between an online school and a ground campus. If you are working, raising a family or taking care of any other responsibilities while going to school, juggling all of your activities can be quite difficult when attending a ground campus. This is even true when attending community colleges, which traditionally offer more flexibility than four-year colleges and universities. Therefore, if your schedule is tight and you are looking for a school with a great deal of flexibility, an online school is probably the best route for you to take.
Your Major
The major you are interested in pursuing is another important consideration when deciding upon the right type of school for you. Although online schools do offer a growing number of degree programs, there are still some degrees that simply cannot be earned online. As such, you may be left with no other choice but to attend a ground campus.
The School’s Reputation
In the past, online schools had somewhat of a negative reputation, but this reputation has changed quickly. As an increasing number of people have turned to the Internet to help them take their education to the next level, online degrees have been more acceptable. So, if you are concerned about the reputation or the “value” of your degree, there is no longer a difference between online schools and ground campuses. Rather than judging the school’s reputation based on the method of instruction, it is better to simply make certain the school is properly accredited.
Your Social Expectations
If socializing with your peers and interacting with them on a personal basis is important to you, you may not feel satisfied by your online school experience. While online schools do make every effort to get students to interact with one another through the Internet, some find the lack of “face time” with their peers to be disappointing. Similarly, if you want to get involved in the whole “college experience” by attending sporting events and other school activities, you may find online schools to be less satisfying.
Your Budget
Although it is not always the case, online schools generally tend to be less costly than ground campus schools. Therefore, if your budget is tight, attending an online school may be the better money-saving option. Even if the tuition is not necessarily less expensive, keep in mind that you will save on transportation costs, which could potentially add up to hundreds of dollars each year.
