Like Working with Your Hands? Go for It!

Do you enjoy working with your hands? Are you interested in becoming an auto mechanic, a plumber, an electrician or some other type of professional who gets “down and dirty” with his or her job? If so, you may have shied away from pursuing one of these jobs because you feel society is pushing you toward obtaining a four-year college degree rather than pursuing a career in the trades. But, the reality is that our country is in dire need of more qualified professionals who can handle a career within the trades and, if this is an area that is of interest to you, you could certainly enjoy a very long-lasting and stable career in one of these fields. In fact, the recent economic downturn as increased the demand for skilled workers within these fields as we try to get more use out of big ticket items rather than replacing them as soon as something goes wrong with them.

The continued changes taking place within our global economy are also helping to increase the job stability for those who work within the trades. After all, those people whose jobs can be done completely from behind a desk can easily see their jobs being outsourced to less expensive laborers in other countries. When it comes to a job such as fixing a car or repairing an electrical problem, however, you have to actually be on-site to complete the job. As such, you have no threat of having your job outsourced oversees when you work within one of these fields.

This is not to say that going to school isn’t important. In fact, if you wish to pursue a career in one of these fields, you will still need to head off to school in order to learn more about the trade. In addition, the duties of electricians, plumbers and auto mechanics are becoming increasingly more complex and technical, which means you will need to continue to head back to school in order to stay on top of the latest innovations as well as the most recent regulations. What this does mean, however, is that you don’t need to feel obligated to go to school in order to earn a four-year degree if your interests really lie within using your hands.
