Advantages of Being an Older Student

So you might not know the latest slang or dance crazes. And you may not be able to relate to all the latest trends. But that shouldn’t stop you from going back to college. There are many advantages to being an older student. Here are a few:

You’re more mature than some of your classmates – When you’re older, you have that “been there, done that” mindset. You couldn’t care less about hooking up and partying. You have the ability to focus on your education.

You can leverage your life experiences – Most traditional students don’t have real-world experience. You do. That experience may help you relate to your studies a little bit better.

You have more self-discipline – As mentioned before, you’ve exercised your right to party already. So when it comes to studying, you won’t find it hard to stay focused. You know what you want and are more likely to stay on track.

This is all new to you - Unlike traditional students, you’ve had a little break from school. So to you, learning is an exciting and new experience. This is great because you probably won’t get burned out like some traditional students do.

You know what you want – Traditional students often go to college without having a career path in mind. As an older student, you know what you want to accomplish with your degree program. You know if you’re going to school to advance your career or if you just want to fulfill a personal goal.
