Job Search Tips for Older Professionals
According to the AARP, the jobless rate for the over-55 group has more than doubled from a year ago, when it was 3.1% The number of unemployed older workers has more than doubled as well, from 839,000 in April 2008 to 1.85 million last month.
The numbers are frightening but they shouldn’t stop you from trying to find a new opportunity. If you are an older professional, here are some tips to assist you with your job search:
Take some time for yourself If you were just laid off and having trouble getting past that experience, take some time to regroup. Spend some time with your family or friends. Also use this time to develop a job-search strategy.
Look for “age-friendly” employers – Some places really value older workers. It’s a good idea to consider these companies in your job search. Check out websites like www.aarp.org and www.primecb.com.
Tighten-up your resume – If you’ve had quite a few jobs in the last 20 years, just list the ones that you’ve worked in the last 10. Also, list any pertinent training and computer skills that you’ve picked up along the way. You want to show that you still have a lot to offer.
Network – Don’t just rely on the Internet or newspapers for job listings. Get out there and attend industry-related events. These events give you the chance to meet new people and get your name out there.
Consider a temp agency – Temp agencies can get you job assignments with companies that are looking for your skill set. Sometimes they may even assist you with your resume or interviewing skills. They may also provide training.
