How Does the Economy and Fashion Mix?

The every-changing and always exciting world of fashion design just threw its 27th annual Fashion Awards at Lincoln Center. The event was held by the Council of Fashion Designers of America and hosted by comedian Tracy Ullman. The evening was filled with laughter and good times. Along with the pleasantness, a very important statement was made: there is an obvious changing guard of American fashion.

The fashion times are definitely a-changin’. In these tough economic times, the clothing consumers are in the midst in a revolution. Many aspiring fashionistas are choosing to forgo their expensive outfits in favor of a more fiscally conservative flair. Ms. Ullman echoed the statements of many Americans by quipping: “fight on … from the mountains of Aspen to the basement of Daffy’s, fight on!”

In past years, the event was something of a self-congratulatory pep rally of top designers, but this year’s awards had a decidedly anti-luxury tone. While the usual suspects, including Marc Jacobs, Vera Wang, and Ralph Lauren all received awards, many member of this year’s fashion guild represented the new face of fashion.

Newcomers Kate and Laura Mullueavy of Rodarte were given an award for their recent women’s wear line. This was a special honor because the two sisters didn’t have any formal training, just a passion for design. Within four short years of designing out of their Pasadena home, the sisters were being recognized at the prestigious Fashion Awards. Designer Donna Karan noted that the fashion industry is taking huge steps to welcome fresh talent and creative ideas.

This is great news for all you future designers out there! The influx of young designers means that anyone with a passion for fashion has a chance to make the cut. Although it is possible to be a fashion designer with no formal schooling, it might be a steep hill to climb. Fashion schools are a great way to network, learn the tricks of the trade, and find future jobs.

With a little bit of luck, you could be on your way to the Fashion Awards!

Alexander Wang really did a good job there. So impressive. How I wish I could be in one of those wardrobes while busy in my shift at the hospital instead of the Adar scrub I’m wearing now.
