It seems impossible these days to turn on the television or radio without hearing a story about the current state of the automobile industry. It is undeniable that the auto industry in the United States has received a great deal of media attention – and for good reason. First, U.S. autoworkers are going to need to become far more flexible and be willing to change with the industry as it adapts to our new economy and to the world’s changing needs. Many predict that major changes will take place within the union, which many consider to be an outdated means of protecting laborers that has become more destructive than helpful in the long-run. It is unlikely, however, that the UAW will completely vanish, but it is likely that it will change significantly over the next several years.

Another change that is likely to take place within the auto industry is the focus on the types of vehicles that are being developed. President Obama has made it clear that he wants to see automobiles become far more fuel-efficient and eco-friendly than they currently are. Therefore, due to the strict guidelines that are being created through his administration, the automobile industry is going to need to work hard at creating vehicles that are more fuel efficient than what is currently on the market. Of course, this type of research and development requires money, which means the automobile manufacturers will need to look into ways to streamline the manufacturing process in order to reduce costs.

With the government being the majority stakeholder in both Chrysler and General Motors, it is highly unlikely that either company will go under entirely. Since the government has a vested interest in the success of these businesses, it will likely do whatever it takes to make them successful. At the same time, if the government agencies overseeing the takeover of these businesses do their job, there will likely be many changes and cuts in regard to wasteful spending.

Therefore, the future looks bright for these companies in many ways. On the other hand, it doesn’t necessarily look so bright for American workers. According to some reports, automobile manufacturers are increasingly looking toward shipping their production to foreign countries in order to cut back on expenses. Chrysler, for example, shut down a plant in Kenosha, Wisconsin and decided to ship the plant’s production to Mexico. As a result, about 800 American autoworkers found themselves out of a job. This relocation of production and the loss of American jobs is even more devastating when considering the fact that American tax dollars have been responsible for keeping the company in business in the first place.
