Facebook: The Movie
This just in: Hollywood is buzzing about plans for a new movie. No, it’s not another “Transformers” or “Terminator” sequel—it’s a flick about Facebook!
The film will provide Facebook fanatics with juicy facts about how the CEO and founder Mark Zuckerberg began the social media craze while he was still a sophomore at Harvard University. Today, Facebook has 200 MILLION registered users, making it one of the most influential social media tools of all time.
The movie script is slated to be written by “West Wing” creator Aaron Sorkin. His script will be based on the book “The Accidental Billionaires: The Founding of Facebook, a Tale of Sex, Money, Genius, and Betrayal” written by Ben Mezrich. The book documents the conflicts and controversy that surrounded the rise of the social networking site.
While the book is classified as nonfiction, there is quite a bit of debate about how real the story actually is. Mezrich has been known to fabricate characters and stories in his non-fiction works, admitting to blatantly inventing people and situations in his best-selling non-fiction work, “Bringing Down the House”.
Here is what we know for certain: in an attempt to get a date, Zuckerberg hacked on to the university’s computer system and created a ratable database of all the female students on campus. Then, voila!, the framework for Facebook was born in Zuckerberg’s small dorm room.
Mezrich’s publisher seems less concerned about the charges of fabrication, stating that “The Accidental Billionaires” “is not reportage. It is big juicy fun.”
“Juicy fun” is definitely right. With flourish and zest, Mezrich describes the elaborate fraternity rituals at Harvard, dorm parties, and college hook-ups.
While the Facebook movie might be all fun and games, the reality is that the site is partially responsible for changing the face of the Internet. The site has provided a forum for thousands people to find jobs, network with potential employers, and discuss college and career options with their peers.
Though Mezrich’s book may be trite, we can’t wait to see how Facebook is depicted on the big screen!
