Love Animals? Become a Vet Tech!
Do you have a love for animals? If so, then why not consider becoming a veterinary technician. Under the supervision of a licensed veterinarian, you can make a difference in the welfare of an animal.
Veterinarian technicians normally work in private practices. Their role is to carry out laboratory procedures and clinical testing of animals. Veterinary technicians can be involved in performing such duties as diagnosing illness, administering medicine to cure the ailment of an animal, helping to relieve discomfort, and calming down distressed or disturbed animals. Helping to perform these tasks is a gratifying experience, not only because you are making a difference in the life of an animal, but you are also providing comfort and relief to its owner.
There is also the opportunity for veterinary technicians to work in diagnostic laboratories or research facilities. Here, they treat animals with oral or topical medication and record the outcomes of treatment as well as taking note of an animal’s genealogy, food intake, weight, medications, diet, and clinical signs of hurt and suffering.
To become a veterinary technician, you need to complete a two year associate’s degree from an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited school. There are excellent job opportunities for veterinary technicians in the coming years, since there will be a void to replace retiring veterinarian technicians. In fact, there is an expectant increase of up to 41% more job openings from 2006 to 2016. We are living in a pet-obsessed society where people are willing to spend as much money as possible to ensure the health and wellbeing of their beloved animals. As long as this view continues, job opportunities for veterinary technicians look positive and secure.
