Three Steps to Getting Motivated in College

Whether you have recently headed back to college of you have already completed a few years, you may be finding yourself having difficulty with getting motivated. Sure, you may be concerned about your grades and you may want to do well, but there is sometimes a major difference between what we want to do and what we actually do. Why? Because it can sometimes be difficult to motivate ourselves to take the steps necessary to achieve our goals.

There can be many reasons for experiencing a lack of motivation. Perhaps you are simply bored with school or the courses you are taking do not cover topics that are of interest to you. Or, perhaps you are finding yourself too easily distracted by other responsibilities, such as your home life or your career, and this has left little room for you to get excited about going to school. Regardless of the reason for your lack of motivation, the good news is that there are steps you can take to get yourself motivated once more. In fact, by following this three-step process, you will likely find yourself feeling refreshed, excited and ready to hit those books with all the gusto they deserve!

Step #1: Remember Your Goals

The first step you need to take to get back on track with your studies is to simply remember why you came to college in the first place. Once you lose sight of your goals, you lose your motivation to apply yourself to your studies. Unfortunately, it can be easy to lose sight of your goals after you enroll in college because it can take quite a bit of time for your studies to be complete. Without instant gratification, your motivation begins to fall by the wayside and school starts to become more a chore than an exciting opportunity for growth and learning. By continually reminding yourself of your goals and why you are going to college, you will be better capable of seeing the progress you have made and keeping yourself motivated to continue moving forward.

Step #2: Call Upon Reinforcements

Of course, it is still possible to lose your motivation even while keeping your eyes on the prize. Therefore, it is beneficial to have someone in your corner who can occasionally get you pumped up and keep you on track. If you have ever tried to start a new workout routine, you know the value of having a workout buddy to help keep you motivated. The same concept is true when keeping yourself motivated in school. By having someone at your side to provide support and words of encouragement, you will be more likely to stay on track. In addition, just as when you have a workout buddy, the fear of letting down the other person can be a huge motivating factor. Be sure to find someone you care about who can give you the stern “talking to” that you need to keep your goals straight your motivation holding strong.

Step #3: Re-Evaluate as Necessary

If you have moved through steps 1 and 2 and you are still finding it difficult to stay motivated in school, it may be time for you to seriously re-evaluate your goals. After starting a degree or certificate program, you may realize that the area of study simply is not what you thought it would be or does not interest you as much as you had anticipated. If you discover that you truly no longer have a passion for the subject, it may be time to look into other program options that may be better suited for your interests. Don’t consider this to be a failure, but rather a detour in the road you are taking toward building a brighter future for yourself.
