How to Use Your Summer Break Wisely
So, the school year has wrapped up and you find yourself with the whole summer left to yourself. While you are probably quite grateful for having a little “down time” – particularly if you are working while going to school or if you have a family that you are taking care of – there are a few things you should keep in mind in order to get the most out your summer break. Here are five things you might want to do this summer while you have a little extra time.
#1: Work on Your Portfolio
While you are off for the summer, you might want to use the time to start working on developing your professional portfolio. Having something to show to potential employers to show off what you can do and to differentiate yourself from the competition will go a long way when you start your job search. Even if you are a few years away from graduation, it is never to early to start gathering materials to include in your portfolio. If you are an artist, things such as drawings or photography samples should be included in the portfolio. Even if you aren’t in a creative field, however, items such as newspaper clippings, reports or other items that can showcase your talents and accomplishments should be included in your portfolio.
#2: Get Networking
You may not have enough time during the school year to network with other people within your field, but the summer frees up valuable time that can be put to use in this way. Start reaching out to professional organizations and other groups where you can meet other people who are interested or employed in your field. Now is a great time to forge these relationships and to make them strong so you don’t have to invest quite as much time in those relationships once the school year starts up again.
#3: Gain Valuable Experience
You might also want to use your summer to start gaining valuable experience within your field. You might be able to find a summer internship within your industry that will help you gain knowledge and experience that you can never get at school. Don’t be afraid to approach companies to find out if you can volunteer your time with them. Not only will this help you gain that all-important experience, it will also help you make connections within your field that might later help you land a job.
#4: Spend Time with Friends and Family
Of course, your summer doesn’t have to be all about school and your career. This is also a great time for you to spend with your friends and family, particularly if the school year is so hectic that you find it difficult to find time for social activities. With the great weather and longer days, the summer is the perfect time for you to reconnect with your loved onces.
#5: Relax!
In addition to spending time with your friends and family, it is also important for you to find time to relax. Whether this means hanging out with people you care about or spending time alone, make certain to do something you enjoy so you can unwind. Not only will it feel great to get some rest and relaxation, it will also help recharge your batteries so you are ready to tackle the books and return to your hectic schedule when the school year starts up again.
