Future Entrepreneurs Have Different GPAs While In School

Chad Moutray, the chief economist of the Office of Advocacy of the Small Business Administration, has completed a study that tracks the difference in grade point average for students who eventually become entrepreneurs and students who don’t see their boss in the mirror every morning. The results of the study show an interesting and surprising difference in GPA between those who become entrepreneurs and those who work for someone. Now, before reading on, take a guess on what the difference is and why. You may be surprised.

According to the New York Times, the data collected is from the Department of Education from the undergraduate class of 1993. Overall the study showed that students with higher GPAs were less likely to work for themselves. In general, students with higher GPAs were 2% less likely to be their own boss. However, this was not an across the board projection.

For students with majors in foreign languages, computer science and business, their grades did not seem to influence whether they captained their own ship or not. In fact, the GPA was virtually identical for people who became their own superior and people who managed to have a boss in life.

However, in majors like math, science, engineering and statistics, there was an across the board difference in overall GPA for entrepreneurs and other workers, albeit a minor difference. In statistics, for example, most self-employed workers had a 2.76 GPA while those in the regular work force had a 2.84 GPA.

So what can we derive from this study. Potentially not much because of the minor difference in grade point averages. However, for any of you out there that have always wanted to be your own boss but haven’t been superior students, this study does show that the future can still be bright. Doing well in school is one thing, but working hard and smart is another. Entrepreneurs are also blessed with a level of courage that make them comfortable flying solo.
