5 Tips for Taking College Tests

If you are like many college students, you may suffer from a significant amount of test anxiety. In this case, it is beneficial for you to implement a few simple tips to help alleviate your anxiety and to improve your performance on the tests that you take. But, even if the thought of taking a test does not cause you to break out into cold sweats, the following five tips will help you get the best grade possible on your test.

Tip #1: Listen in Class

The first step toward performing well on your tests is to simply pay attention in class. Often, the questions that are presented on tests cover materials that were covered in class and that are not in the book. In fact, your professor may tell you something that is completely different from what the book says, particularly if the topic is a matter of opinion or if the information is somewhat outdated. Paying attention in class, taking notes, asking questions and otherwise being actively engaged in class discussion will help you feel more confident when test day rolls around.

Tip #2: Don’t Cram the Night Before

Many college students make the mistake of trying to cram in two weeks worth of materials the night before the big test. The human brain simply isn’t capable of processing, understanding and remembering that much material in the matter of one night. Spend a little time each day – or at least a few days per week – reviewing the materials so it can slowly cement itself in your memory. Not only will this help your brain process the information more effectively, it will also provide you with opportunities to ask your professor for clarification on certain topics if necessary.

Tip #3: Get Plenty of Sleep

Another reason to avoid the all night cram session is the fact that staying up all night will prevent you from getting plenty of sleep before the big test. Research has demonstrated over and over again that the brain process and recalls information more quickly and effectively when has had a full night’s sleep.

Tip #4: Eat a Good Breakfast

Concentrating on your test will be difficult if your stomach is rumbling the whole time, so be sure to eat a good breakfast before heading to class. Try to keep the breakfast healthy and choose foods that are agreeable to you so you don’t develop an upset stomach, gas or other problems while taking your test.

Tip #5: Bring Extra Supplies

Bring a couple extra pencils, pens and paper to class with you on test day. This way, you won’t have to worry about getting stressed out because you do not have the supplies you need for the test. Even if you don’t think extra paper or other supplies will be necessary, bring them anyway. The last thing you need is to feel as if you are behind the eight ball before you even get started because you don’t have the supplies you need.
