The Military is “Going Green”
If you are looking for an eco-friendly career path, you might want to consider joining the military! According to news reports, armies around the world are looking for ways to make their equipment more eco-friendly. Of course, this isn’t just for environmental reasons, but because eco-friendly equipment is ultimately more efficient and less expensive to operate. During these tough economic times, finding ways to save money is certainly something that deserves taking a closer look.
Making military equipment more eco-friendly isn’t all about saving money, however, as making the equipment more fuel efficient also means it can be used for a longer period of time without needing to be refueled. As such, troops can be deployed to remote destinations with less concern regarding getting fuel shipped in. This will also allow military personnel to take more equipment with them, as some experts estimate that approximately 70% of the bulk tonnage taken on missions is actually fuel.
Already eco-friendly military vehicles are being developed. In fact, TARDEC recently showed several of these vehicles, which included a diesel-electric hybrid that offers silent mobility for up to six miles, to California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger. The United States isn’t the only country that is taking a greener look at its equipment, however, as a number of other countries are teaming up with civilian companies in order to create eco-friendly equipment as well.
So, over the next several years, we can expect to see more hybrid tanks, jet fighters and other equipment as well as solar-powered equipment – all of which will still be as strong as the current equipment while also providing the extra advantage of being quieter and stealthier.
