Advice for International Students Studying Nursing in the United States

If you are someone who is considering coming to the United States to pursue your interest in obtaining a nursing degree, there are many things you need to take into consideration. Obviously, the simple fact that you will be going to a foreign country in order to continue your education is already going to be a life-changing and challenging experience. By selecting the right school and the right program, however, you can certainly obtain the education you need while also having an amazing experience in the Unite States.

Over the last several years, the programs being offered at nursing schools have changed tremendously. As a result of these changes, those who complete their nursing school education are better prepared to enter the world of nursing than ever before. This is because many schools offer programs that are creative, hands-on and interactive. In addition, the programs are more learner-focused than they are teacher-centered, which guarantees that students graduate from their programs with a solid understanding of the science behind nursing as well as the experience they need to be successful in the field.

Obviously, learning to become a nurse is about more than just understanding medicine and how the human body workers. Rather, graduates need to have solid communication skills as well as the ability to work within an atmosphere that is continually changing and is often unpredictable. They also need to have good bedside skills that involves knowing how to treat their patients as well as handling the questions of their patients’ friends and family.

If you are coming to the United States to pursue a nursing degree, you should expect the program to be challenging, yet to be innovative and designed to meet your learning needs. You should also expect to be able to gain hands-on experience with state-of-art laboratories and equipment while also enjoying access to a vast array of computer and library resources. Since the United States is a melting pot of cultures and races, you can also expect to work with patients who come from a wide variety of socioeconomic, ethnic, religions, educational and cultural backgrounds.

When choosing the nursing school and program that is right for you, there are several things you should consider. These include:

· What courses are you required to complete and how will they help you with your career in nursing?
· How much flexibility is there with the program and how much of an opportunity will you have to select courses you are interested in taking?
· What type of clinical experiences area made available to students?
· Will you have the opportunity to learn within a variety of different healthcare settings?
· What are the educational levels and qualifications of the faculty?
· What types of resources are available to provide students with the support they need to succeed in the program?
· What types of special resources are available to international students?
· What kind of a relationship is built between students and faculty members?
· What type of accreditation does the school and its nursing program have?

Of course, if you are going to come to the United States to study nursing, you will also want to take advantage of educational opportunities that exist outside of the coursework you will be taking. Attending special lectures or participating in the school’s National Student Nurses Association chapter, for example, can help you gain more from your experience with studying abroad.

    I agree with the points you have listed in this article, that international students coming to the United States for studying Nursing will have to face challenges and compete with the rest in order to survive in this field because of the vast opportunities the state offers. It can also be said that United States is fast becoming one of the international health care centers of the world.
