Gov. David Paterson of New York signed into law a bill that will force NY Hospitals to disclose nursing staffing ratios. This will better the ratio of patient to nurse which will of course result in more nurse hirings and better quality of life for patients. Paterson stated that “New Yorkers have the right to the best health care in the world, and I will do everything in my power to make sure they have access to it. I am proud that New York state is leading the charge to insure our citizens, and I am pleased that we are holding hospitals accountable to provide our patients with qualified nursing care.” This seems like a prime moment for those interested in becoming a nurse to engage in that interest.

Nurse groups across New York showed their joy and appreciation for Paterson’s legislation. This is both good for patients and nurses for a variety of reasons. Patients will now know the ratios in a specific hospital and will be able to make an informed decision about whether to get medical attention in those hospitals. Nurses will have more representation in terms of staff and will be able to give more quality care to each patient. With the burden of juggling 40 jobs at once gone, a nurse can give individualized care and attention to those who are recovering from surgery or who are about to undergo a procedure. Tina Gerardi, a registered nurse who is chief executive officer of the New York State Nurses Association stated that “This is a landmark measure for both patients and nurses.”

The new law, taking effect in March 2010, will require each hospital to report the numbers of registered nurse and licensed practical nurses who provide direct care to patients. Ratios of patients to nurse will be required, as well as the numbers of unlicensed personnel providing direct care. Further, this legislation will require hospitals to report adverse events like medication errors and injuries in order to better streamline the system and take appropriate action where need be.

To be the best nurse requires the best environment possible. For this legislation to slowly create a more error free environment by bringing on more staff and addressing errors in work will make both the patients and nurses life more comfortable.
