Steve McQueen – Classic. American. Style.
Steve McQueen is the epitome of classic American style. Known as the “King of Cool,” McQueen is a movie star of the 1960s and 1970s starring in popular movies such as The Magnificent Seven, The Great Escape, Bullit, The Getaway, Papillion and The Towering Inferno. He received an Academy Award nomination for his role in The Sand Pebbles. In 1974, he became the highest paid movie star in the world. “The King of Cool” was an avid racer of motorcycles and cars and many modern fashion
lines are emulating his classic urban style.
Major fashion lines are designing their new lines after McQueen’s classic image. Dolce & Gabbana created T-shirts designed with the late movie star’s face for this upcoming spring season following the success of the same limited edition line of spring 2008 that was a success. In addition, D&G are also carrying off-white, slim-fitting corduroy pants and Baracuta jackets much like the ones the actor wore. Gucci is featuring racing-driver looks in their spring 2009 runway show. A.P.C. has recreated the “old school jacket,” a remake of the Harrington bomber that McQueen wore. Hermes and Michael Kors are both carrying clothing and bags inspired by McQueen. And it’s not just clothing lines, accessory lines Tag Heuer and Persol have designed a new watch and aviator glasses that are identified with the “King of Cool.”
McQueen’s style is cool, suave and masculine. Fashion designers were attracted to the natural All-American image of McQueen with his stint as a U.S. marine, rugged athleticism, less-is-more acting style and real-life love of car racing and motorcycles. Well now men will be able to get McQueen’s style straight from the source…
The new official Steve McQueen clothing line will be debuted in 2010! The line is produced by motorcycle maker Johnson Motors Inc. and GreenLight (the company that manages his licensing rights) with the blessing of McQueen’s son, Chad McQueen. The line embodies McQueen’s basic yet stylish fashion sense. The brand new line includes flat front chinos, suede desert boots, straight leg jeans, windbreaks, shawl-collar cardigans, T-shirts, sweat shirts, leather jackets and pea coats.
When asked how his father would feel about his resurrected popularity in fashion, Chad McQueen states, “My dad was pretty humble about stuff like that. How would Dad feel? I don’t think he would have taken himself too seriously. When I was growing up, he was really stylish, but his persona was about flying under the radar, being stylish but low-key.”
