Is an Online Education Right for You?

Are you trying to determine whether or not attending an online school is right for you? If you aren’t certain if an online education is the right step for you to take, you should ask yourself these simple questions.

Do You Need to Attend a School with a Flexible Schedule?

Although brick and mortar institutions are working hard to offer flexible schedules and it is quite common to find community colleges that offer night and weekend classes, this still may not be flexible enough for you. When attending an online school, you can attend classes on whichever days suit you best and at whatever time you desire. Therefore, if you are trying to juggle a job, a family or any other responsibilities while attending school, an online education might be best for you.

Can Your Major Be Pursued Online?

While obtaining an online education is certainly more convenient than going to a brick and mortar school, the unfortunate reality is that there are still some majors that cannot be pursued online. On the other hand, the number and variety of degrees that can be earned online continues to grow on a regular basis. Therefore, you shouldn’t automatically assume that your degree cannot be earned through an online school. Do a little research to find out what is available to you.

Are You a Motivated Learner?

The convenience of attending school online is certainly one of its most attractive features. At the same time, if you are someone who has a hard time remaining on task or if you have a tendency to procrastinate, attending school online might not be right for you. In order to be successful with an online school, you need to be able to take responsibility for your own learning. Remember, there are no college professors standing at your side encouraging you to move forward. In addition, because you have the flexibility to create your own schedule, it is easy to push your studies aside and to fall behind. So, if you are not someone who can stay on task on his or her own, an online education might not be right for you.

Are You a Visual Learner?

If you are a visual learner who enjoys moving at your own pace and reading through materials in order to grasp new concepts, attending an online school is perfect for you. Although you may occasionally watch online videos or attend workshops or other events where you can obtain hands on experience the majority of your education will likely revolve around reading through materials. If you learn well in this manner, attending an online school is a great choice for you.

Are You Short On Time?

If time is a concern for you, attending an online school can be a great option because you don’t have to worry about wasting time as you travel to campus or as you kill time between classes. Of course, this can also go a long way toward saving you money because you don’t have to worry about buying gas to get to and from school or about wear and tear on your vehicle.
