One of our local nurses is receiving a big honor.

Barbara Doran, a Nursing Education Specialist at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center, has been chosen to receive the “2009 Nursing Recognition Award”.

Hundreds of nurses and educators in the Garden State will honor Doran at the 2009 Nurse Recognition Awards & Autumn Gala on November 6th at The Pines Manor. Barbara’s “true calling and love for the specialty emanate through all of her work,” said Dr. John Brennan, Executive Director of Newark Beth Israel Medical Center and Children’s Hospital of New Jersey. “She is an outstanding educator.”

The New Jersey League for Nursing offers continuing education programs about current issues in health care, as well as helping to build a strong and diverse nursing workforce to meet the needs of New Jersey’s population. Ms. Doran, a resident of Scotch Plains, is responsible for developing, facilitating and providing professional development activities at Newark Beth Israel.

Among her many duties, she coordinates and teaches in Generic Nursing Orientation; facilitates and provides in-service and continuing education programs; oversees the facility’s New Jersey State Nurse’s Association’s (NJSNA) Continuing Education Providership; and acts as a preceptor to graduate nursing students. She also acts as a professional development resource and mentor to staff, and members of the Patient Care Leadership Team.

Like thousands of other nurses across the country, Doran works hard at her profession—she is an outstanding teacher, health care provider, and friend. If you are looking for a rewarding career path or are a college student who is trying to decide upon a profession, Ms. Doran would be the first to tell you that nursing is highly satisfying.

Although it has long been no secret that our country is experiencing a shortage in nurses and is in great need of finding more qualified individuals to fill open positions, the time to become a nurse has never been greater than it is today. This is because there are still plenty of job openings available and, because of the shortage we are experiencing, there is also a great deal of financial assistance available to those who are interested in a career in nursing.

No matter how old you are, pursuing a career in nursing can be very rewarding. Although the job can be very physically and emotionally challenging, it is a great field for those who enjoy working in a constantly-changing atmosphere as well as for those with a strong aptitude for science and communications. Every day presents a new set of challenges in the life of a nurse, and people like Barbara Doran wouldn’t have it any other way!
