Best and Worst College Majors

In the spring of 2009, the National Association of Colleges and Employers polled more than 36,000 students, including graduating seniors. They asked them to specify their major, whether they have applied to jobs, and if they have received any employment offers. Based on their answers, the NACE determined the three best majors for today’s job prospects…and also the worst.

Most lucrative majors:

Computer Sciences -average starting salary is $61,467

If you are thinking about a career in computer sciences, the field is definitely taking off! People who enjoy tinkering with computers can be found in the following professions: computer programmers, analysts, electronic engineers, and game designers.

Accounting – average starting salary is $48,471

Accountants are much more than the people who do your taxes! They help keep business in America running smoothly by predicting revenue, establishing budgets, and analyzing financial data.

Physical sciences (including biology, math, chemistry, physics, and geology) – average starting salary is $43,012

People who major in the hard sciences can often be found working in the health care industry. These hard-working professionals are responsible for keeping Americans healthy, happy, and safe!

Worst-paying majors:

Graphic design – average starting salary is $35,288

Foreign languages - average starting salary is $35,501

Journalism – average starting salary is $35,895
