Careers in Healthcare without Blood & Needles

Jobs in the healthcare field offer great paychecks and great job security.  However you shouldn’t overlook a career in healthcare just because you can’t stand the sight of blood or needles.  There are numerous health care jobs that don’t deal with blood at all and many don’t even deal with patients at all.  Take a look at these blood-free and needle-free jobs…

Pharmacy TechnicianMost pharmacy technicians work in drug store and grocery store pharmacies.  Their duties include working the cash register, answering the phone and performing tasks to preparing medications like counting tablets and labeling bottles.  Pharmacy technicians can get on the job training, although having a certificate will help you stand out.  Pharmacy technicians bring in an average annual salary of $28,500.

Medical Transcriptionist – Many medical transcriptionists work in the comforts of their own home without ever seeing any patients.  Medical transcriptionists listen to audio recordings made by doctors and type them up for medical records.  This job requires only a one to two year training program on medical terminology with an average annual salary of $46,300.

Physical Therapist Assistant – Physical therapist assistants help patients overcome physical challenges like arthritis, lower back pain or to regain movement throughout the body.  They help patients by demonstrating new exercises and stretches and help to prepare equipment of patient use.  Physical therapist assistants require a two year associate’s degree.  However, if you want to get a feel for the position you can work as a physical therapist aid without any special training.  The average annual salary for this position is $40,300.

Medical Records & Health Information Technician – Medical records and health information technicians are in charge of maintaining patient files for doctors and insurance companies by making sure that records are entered completely and accurately in computer databases.  These technicians are required to heave a two year associate’s degree and make an average annual salary of $30,610.

Dietitian – Dietitians are essentially experts on food and nutrition.  With a four year bachelor’s degree, dietitians are left with many options of what their focus will be and where to work.  They can do anything from planning food programs for a school or work cafeteria to working one on one with patients with long term diseases like diabetes to develop healthy diets for them to consulting with athletes to help them eat right with the goal of achieving their best performance.  Dietitians earn an average annual salary of $51,470.
