Obama Says Nurses are “bedrock” of Medical Profession

President Obama has always had a deep admiration of the medical field. He knows that both doctors and nurses are the fighting force in America’s health services sector. For this reason, he’s spent much of the past few weeks with doctors and nurses as he tries to push health care reform into the end zone. The President knows the respect doctors and nurses have in the eyes of Americans, and feels it’s a tragedy that there is a nursing shortage in these United States. However, with the many press conferences he’s done on the issue of healthcare, he’s hoping a flashlight on this shortage can boost popularity and interest in the nursing field.

A few weeks ago, President Obama and Organizing for America (OFA), the campaign arm of the Democratic National Committee, launched a television ad featuring a nurse speaking on health care reform. The nurse stated, “I see it everyday on the job, our health care system is broken.” Later, OFA sent an email urging nurses to rally around Obama’s plan. He is trying to build a support group in order to not only push his platform through, but to also spotlight and give recognition to the men and women who dedicate their lives to the nursing profession.

According to the Washington Post, “By putting doctors and nurses so far forward in the final days of the health care fight, Obama is seeking to capitalize on the tremendously positive public perception of those two professions.” Nurses are honored in this country for the beautiful struggle they face everyday. Yet, the men and women that put on those scrubs are in a shortage in this country. Schools and hospitals are stretched to their maximum in trying to care for patients and students with adequate attention. But why is that?

In a late 2008 Gallup survey, 84 percent of respondents said that nurses had either “very high” honesty and ethical standards. This is a noble profession with a rich tradition. Schools, hospitals and clinics need more nurses to help patients recover from their illnesses and operations. There stable and lucrative profession screaming for you to join its ranks.
