Obama Boosting Infrastructure Funding – Jobs Are On the Way
President Obama has taken many extreme measures to ensure that our economy does not dip into a depression. Now he is consider a mix of spending programs in order to respond to our increasing unemployment rate that would also help stimulate the economy even more. Although not labeled a stimulus, it will directly funnel money into the infrastructure of the U.S.,which many consider the backbone of the nation’s economy. This will increase jobs and spending for construction workers, electricians, and plumbers, as well as hopefully boosting our chances of quickening out of this recession before it becomes unbearable.

With concerns about the rising unemployment rate and a deficit at 1.6 trillion, initiatives such as boosting transportation spending will hopefully deflate some of the worry. Representative Chris Van Hollen of Maryland stated that more transportation spending would be popular with Democrats. “If there was to be another round of stimulus, additional infrastructure would be at the top of the list,” says Van Holle. Money for roads, transit and bridges would be a priority, which means that construction workers would be given more and more projects to work on.
This increased transportation spending would come under expiring transportation legislation that Congress has to vote on soon. As of September 30, the federal transportation funding program has expired, now working under an extension passed by Congress. Lawmakers are hoping that a reauthorization will happen that will boost funding in this sector so that infrastructure (and the workers that make all of infrastructure possible) will get a lot of financial attention.
According to Bloomberg, “While the transportation funding law typically is renewed in multiyear increments, the Obama administration has instead proposed an 18-month extension, a move backed by the Senate public works panel. That time frame limits the scope of the bill to the period in which economic forecasters expect high unemployment.” Obama knows that he needs to create more jobs, and there’s no better way than to have projects that require more men and women to work them.
Construction, electrical, and plumbing work is the spinal cord of our economy and country. The hardworking individuals that perform these necessary tasks are hurting just like everyone else during this recession. However, with the coming stimulus that President Obama is pushing through, there will be plenty of jobs coming right around the corner. Check out a program that you might want to try a turn at today.
