College Students Use Facebook to Show Off Their Academic Interests

Although Facebook started as a way for old high school classmates and others to reconnect and to keep in touch with one another, it is quickly creeping into the world of academia is well. Not only do students gather on Facebook to discuss last night’s homework and to help each other study for a big test, their profile pages are also providing them with a way to show off their academic interests.

Anyone with a Facebook account is familiar with the option to become a “fan” of different groups represented on the sites. Bands, actors and other celebrities have set up “fan” pages, as have numerous companies and organizations. Other fan pages have also been set up regarding certain causes or opinions, such as “I hate cigarettes.” For college students, however, fan pages for mathematicians, poets and other representatives of academic subjects can also be found.

Not only do these fan pages allow college students to show off a little bit about their personality and interests, it also allows them to connect with other people who share the same interests as they do. While this can certainly be beneficial in terms of extending their social circle, becoming a part of these groups may ultimately turn into a great way to tap into employment opportunities after graduation.
