Get Your Degree in Interior Design Online

Do you have an eye for color? Do you find yourself constantly rearranging furniture, painting walls and adding accessories to your home so you can achieve a fresh, new look? If so, you might want to consider pursuing a degree in interior design online.

With your online interior design degree, you can start putting your eye for aesthetics and your talent design to use. Whether you want to work on private residences, shopping malls, hotels, restaurants, schools or even airport terminals, your online training will prepare you to make the best use of lighting, colors, textures and space to achieve a great look while also keeping safety and function in mind.

Although interior designers have traditionally focused on only the decorating aspect, they are increasingly becoming more involved with the architectural detailing as well. This includes planning for things such as built-in bookshelves or deciding upon the type of crown molding to include in the space. Many interior designers even participate in planning the layout of buildings or even deciding where stairways, windows and walkways will be placed. As such, you can be certain that your online training will include coursework in understanding building and fire codes and reading blueprints.

In order to have the most employment opportunities available to you, it is best to pursue a four-year bachelor’s degree in interior design. After earning your bachelor’s degree in interior design online, you will then need to complete a 1 to 3-year apprenticeship in order to gain the experience that is necessary to pass the licensing exam that is required in many states. If you are interested in becoming an interior design assistant, however, earning a 2 or 3-year certificate or associate’s degree will be adequate.

According to the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics, the median annual income of interior designers was $42,260 in 2006. Those who worked in the architectural and engineering industry earned the most, with a median annual income of $46,750, while those who worked for specialized design services earned $43,250. Those who worked for furniture stores, on the other hand, earned $38,980, while those who worked for building materials and supplies dealers earned the least with a median annual income of $36,650.
