Water Infrastructure Legislation Spells More Jobs in Construction/Plumbing
A historic law has been signed in California that is going to reform and rebuild the state’s water system. As Governor Schwarzenegger stated, “Water is the lifeblood of everything we do in California.” The law will provide for a reduction in water usage to make the system more efficient, but what will spur on massive job growth and stability in the water supply is the funding for infrastructure projects that will call for more dams, above and below ground water storage facilities, and other water systems to be built. This spells great news for plumbers and construction workers who have been looking for more work. Well, all the work they can handle is about to come their way.

This groundbreaking change to the water system is coming at a time when California’s H2O organization was drowning in disrepair. California was the only state in the Western United States that did not regulate groundwater usage. The agricultural water supply was not being distributed prudently while the drinking water supply was barreling towards a future of potential unreliability and corruption. As the Governor went on to say, “Without clean, reliable water, we cannot build, we cannot farm, we cannot grow and we cannot prosper. That is why I am so proud that the legislature, Democrats and Republicans, came together and tackled one of the most complicated issues in our state’s history. This comprehensive water package is a historic achievement.”
Included in the bill is a 20% reduction in per capita water consumption by the year 2020 that will significantly make the system more streamline. Also, a $11 billion bond that is still due for approval will be made into $40 billion upon combination of local and federal funding. With this money, damns, water storage units, conservation and recycling projects, contaminated water cleanup, and different reservoir initiatives will be put in place in order to make one of the most poorly run water-systems into one of the best.
“These landmark bills lay the framework for a 21st Century water policy in California, by establishing a State policy of reducing reliance on the Delta and investing in alternative water supply solutions, including water recycling, groundwater banking, conservation, and low impact development,” said a senior policy analyst at the Natural Resources Defense Council.
Leadership was needed. It was given. Next money was needed. It was provided. Now the subsequent step is a workforce of construction workers and plumbers to use their expertise to make these projects into a reality. As the construction industry has taken a hit in the last fiscal quarter, the stimulus package introduced by president Obama has been focusing on making infrastructure spending and job growth a main priority. Well, a $40 billion dollar project to build extremely necessary dams and water plants is exactly what the construction and plumbing industry needs in order to once again be successful and robust.
