5 Common Mistakes that Lead to Career Death
Are you finding yourself feeling burnt out at your job? Are you starting to wonder if this is truly the right career path for you? Do you feel as if you are just ready to give up on your career? If so, it is time for you to take a serious look at yourself and your career moves in order to determine if there are any changes that you can make. You might be surprised to discover that a few little mistakes made along the way have lead you to where you are today. By taking steps to correct these mistakes, you just might be able to find your passion for your career once more.
Mistake #1: Failure to Plan Properly
Failure to properly plan out your career path can lead to disaster. Before you start down a new path, you need to be sure you have thoroughly researched the requirements for achieving your goals. If you aren’t prepared to take the steps to achieve your career goals, maybe you should reconsider those goals and identify ones that are more realistic for you. As part of the panning process, be sure to also put the proper supports in place to help you achieve your goals. Find people other than your close circle of family and friends to provide you with advice. This way, you can be sure the advice you receive is from someone who will be completely honest.
Mistake #2: Failure to Take Responsibility
While you certainly can and should count on friends and family to provide you with emotional support as you work toward your career goals, you also need to make certain you do not become dependent upon others. The unfortunate reality is that people will make promises to you and then break them. This is not to say they are “bad” people. Rather, situations change and commitments are sometimes broken. So, as you work toward advancing your career, don’t let these individuals stoop you from achieving your goals. Similarly, don’t play the “blame game.” If someone doesn’t come through with his or her promises, shrug it off and keep moving forward.
Mistake #3: Failure to Move On
While you certainly don’t want to bounce from job to job as you work toward achieving your career goals, you also need to recognize when it is time to move on. Too many people stick with a job simply because they are comfortable or because they think things will get better eventually. Don’t get tied down to a job that won’t help with your future goals.
Mistake #4: Failure to Recognize Opportunities
In addition to saying goodbye to dead-end jobs, you also need to keep an eye out for new opportunities. In addition to looking for jobs that have more to offer to you, make sure to take advantage of opportunities to take classes, to volunteer on relevant projects and to build your professional network. In addition, be sure to take advantage of opportunities to relax and to take care of yourself. The less stressed out you are, the better you will be able to focus on your career and to achieve your goals.
Mistake #5: Failure to Show Your Work
Remember when your elementary school teacher made you show your work on your math homework? It’s important to let your boss know what you’re doing, and how you reached certain conclusions. Even if you come up with a wrong answer, it shows your supervisors that you have strong problem-solving abilities and that you’re working hard to solve an issue.
