Make a New Year’s Resolution to Take Control of Your Career

This New Year, your New Year’s resolution should be quite simple – to take control of your career. Too many people get caught up with the day-to-day work involved in their careers that they lose sight of their goals and get off track toward achieving them. If you have decided to make taking control of your career your New Year’s resolution this year, here are a few steps you can take to help make it happen.

Step #1: Create a Biography

The first step toward achieving your New Year’s resolution of getting your career on track is to create a career biography. Think about it – famous people such as rock stars and actors have biographies, so why shouldn’t you? If you have ever attended a conference, you know that the executives who speak at these events also have biographies, which are generally included in the media kits. By creating a biography that showcases your career highlights, you will have something to show to potential employers while also reminding yourself of the great things you have accomplished and have yet to do within your career.

Step #2: Publish Your Biography

After all of the work you have put into creating a career biography, why let it go to waste? To get the most out of your biography, the next step in your New Year’s resolution is to publish your career biography. The good news is that you don’t have to hire an expensive publicist to get this step accomplished. Rather, you only need to publish your biography to the Internet. If you don’t want to set up a Website to showcase your abilities, you can simply post your bio to one of the many professional networking sites that are available on the Internet, such as LinkedIn.

You will make a greater impression, however, if you set up a Website and set it up with a domain name to match your name. Avoid using free Websites when going this route, however, as you want to be sure to leave a professional impression. Furthermore, you don’t want to be promoting Hotmail or AOL every time you send out an email!

Step #3: Market Your Biography Page

The final step in achieving your New Year’s resolution of getting your career rolling is to take steps toward marketing your biography page. Start off by simply announcing your page to your personal and professional network of friends, family and co-workers. By including the right meta tags on your site, you will also help bring the search engines to your site, which may ultimately help you land the new job of your dreams.

Setting up a Website with your career biography is a great way to draw attention to your abilities and accomplishments while also attracting potential employers who can help you take your career to the next level. So, while the process is certainly time-consuming, this is one New Year’s resolution that you should be sure to keep!
