Renting Textbooks Save Money

Many college students grimace at the thought of the new term, and one reason to do so is the thought of having to buy a new set of textbooks for the semester. As if the tuition, dorm room, and meal plan were not enough, students are also worrying over the next bank account-breaker: the campus bookstore.

According to the Southern Regional Education Board, college students are expected to rack up at least $1,000 worth of new textbooks for the academic year. This is provided each book costs on average $100 each, though in most cases, new editions usually sell for much higher (think $50 to $100 higher). With a total of 4-5 classes per semester, each class requiring at least 1 textbook (a few with 2 or more), it’s easily understandable how someone can go over $1,000 in a year.

However, certain colleges have now joined rental programs, and their campus bookstores are loaning students the required texts at tremendously discounted prices, provided the student is over 18, has a credit card, and signs a contract of return. This was the case for seven colleges, including the University of Texas and the University of North Texas.

Managed by the Follet Higher Education Group, this rental program lets students rent new textbooks at $100 for $42.50 per semester. If the students don’t return the book, they are charged an additional 75% of the book price plus a 7.5% processing fee. At least 4,000 students rented over 6,000 books this fall at UTA and were satisfied with the program. This program is currently expanding to 22 colleges across the country.

Campus bookstores aren’t the only ones with a rental program, however. A number of websites have also been hosting rental programs of their own, allowing students to get their textbooks are prices much less than its original selling price.

Here are just a few sites that let you rent out books and ships them to you via UPS (or, if available, there might be Kindle editions):

Chegg – Based in California, Chegg rents out books and buys used textbooks from users.

Book Renter – Also another California-based renting site.

Campus Book Rentals – A textbook rental site sending books from Utah.

Textbook Rentals – A site comparing textbook rental prices from various sources.
