Top Schools Paying High for College Degrees

Recent statistics provided by PayScale.com has pegged engineering graduates as the lucky number earning generous paychecks. With a combination of a great school like Harvey Mudd College and a major in petroleum engineering, graduates have been earning as much as the mid-level salary of $126,000 a year. But it doesn’t just stop there; there are other schools on the list that do well by their graduates.

While mid-career salaries fell an overall 1.5% during the 2009-2010 year, science and engineering related fields still enjoyed a lucrative business. Students from the Ivy League schools as well as those who’ve studied to be engineers, mathematicians, and scientists are successfully finding jobs that pay a decent yearly amount. According to the data collected from almost 1,000 schools, Harvey Mudd College ranked at the top of the list of schools whose graduates earn the highest salaries.

Close to Harvey Mudd are the likes of Dartmouth College and Princeton University, where graduates receive a starting salary of $54,100 and a mid-level salary of $123,000. Behind these two ranking schools, Harvard University, Colgate University, Duke University, California Institute of Technology, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Stanford University, and Bucknell University have also done proud by their graduates. The lowest paying salary would go to Coker College, which is the worst-paying school on the list of schools surveyed; the starting salary was at $28,900, and the mid-career salary was at $40,300.

It also helps that these top salary-earning colleges have prestigious engineering programs. The top major that pays is petroleum engineering, with an average starting salary of $93,000, and a mid-level salary of $157,000. The closest to that high sum goes to aerospace engineering and chemical engineering, both earning employees a mid-level salary of around $108,000. Other sciences raking in the big bucks include applied mathematics, nuclear engineering, biomedical engineering, computer engineering, and physics.

For those who aren’t keen on taking up engineering majors, there are other career paths that provide for decent mid-level pay. Building construction offers a mid-level salary of over $94,000 a year, while government positions can give an average of $87,300. Those looking to go into international relations, supply chain management, and urban planning might be making more than $80,000 a year. Even film production and zoology don’t do too badly as majors; mid-career film salaries can go as far as $77,800, while zoologists can make $68,800 as their mid-level salaries.
