Fastest Growing Careers for 2006

This month we wanted to take a spotlight look at some of our fastest growing programs. Some of the most job growth is within the medical and law enforcement fields. These jobs are growing because of advancements in medical and criminal technology, crime rates and growing awareness of the body.

Medical assistants are trained to perform administrative and clinical duties under the direction of physician. Clinical duties include taking and recording vital signs and medical histories, preparing patients for examination and drawing blood. Training to become a medical assistant only takes 1-2 years. Medical assisting is expected to grow much faster than average and median annual earnings are approximately $24,610.

Criminal justice jobs are among the fastest growing and rewarding jobs out there today. Some of these job positions include detectives, police officers and private investigators. Employment of criminal justice workers is expected to grow faster than the average through the next ten years. Median salaries generally lie between $39,600 and $53,900 annually.

Pharmacy technicians assist pharmacists in providing patients with medication and other health care products. Their duties may include receiving and verifying prescriptions, preparing medication for clients through mixing, counting pills and labeling bottles...

Medical Coding Job Description

Healthcare records are compiled every time a patient sees a healthcare provider. For many reasons, including insurance and billing, these records are organized, coded and entered into a computer for storage and easy retrieval.

The health care professionals who manage these records have many titles - health information coder, medical coding specialists, coding specialists or health information technician.

Regular duties include:

  • Checking medical charts for accuracy and completion
  • Verifying signatures
  • Verifying medical data in computers
  • Clarifying information or diagnosis by communicating with healthcare providers
  • Utilizing computer software to analyze data
