January 2009

Although the beginning of a new year is a great time to think about the future, there is no time like the present to make a positive change in your life. As we usher in 2009, we need to ask ourselves some tough questions: do I feel fulfilled in my current job? Am I a marketable candidate in this economy? Am I qualified enough to be able to snag the job I really want?

No matter what your questions are, there is no better way to jump-start your career than by going back to school. By giving yourself the gift of a college education, you will be able to gain the qualifications and skills that you need to get ahead. So why not set an intention for 2009 to do some career prioritizing?

If you’re still overwhelmed by bad memories of frenzied holiday shopping, here are five easy ways to help you follow through with your educational and career resolutions for the year ahead—

  1. Make some lists. In the spirit of New Year’s, it’s time to list your resolutions! Write down a couple of careers that spark your interest so you can look for a college that has a corresponding career program. If you’re still not sure of what you want to do, try listing the things that you are passionate about and find out of there is a career that incorporates your interests. Don’t worry, since there are a lot of job options available, there is a place for everyone!
  2. Make a plan. Now that you’ve decided to get an advanced degree, you need to figure out how to actually get there. Take a look at some of the colleges on our website. If you find a few that are interesting, contact the admissions representatives. These extremely helpful folks love to send out brochures and information on their school, so you can pick the right college to fit your needs.
  3. Set realistic goals. It’s important to challenge yourself without getting completely overwhelmed. Try making a reasonable timeline with a few of your career goals that you would like to accomplish within the next few years. Do you want to go to school full-time and get your degree as quickly as possible, or would a part-time schedule work better for you if you already have a job? Based on your timeline, see what options are most feasible for you.
  4. Spend money to make money. The money that you invest in a college education today will help you land a great job tomorrow. The good news is that nearly everybody can afford an advanced degree. Lots of schools offer scholarships, grants, and loans to eligible students. So don’t let a little financial guilt get in the way of applying to college!
  5. Follow through. When you have a better idea of what you want to achieve, it’s time to start applying. By taking this important first step, you will be preparing to advance your career by making yourself more desirable to future employers. Get ready for a great 2009 by working towards that degree!

Massage Therapist

No matter what the economy looks like, massage therapists will never find themselves in need of a job. After all, people will always want to have their hurts, injuries, and ailments treated by a trained professional! However, there is much more to massage therapy than just rubbing a sore back.

People with a passion for healing and bodies make excellent massage therapists. Their job is to help re-align the body back to its natural position in order to relieve the patient’s pain. Massage therapists work to rub the muscles and other soft tissues of the body that might be causing some discomfort. They generally use their hands, but some therapists may even use their forearms, elbows, and feet to alleviate muscle tension and decrease stress.

The job outlook for massage therapists is expected to increase over the next few years, as more and more people are discovering the benefits of physical therapy and alternative types of medicine. People who complete massage training programs and obtain a national certificate can expect excellent job prospects.

Here are some places where massage therapists are trained to work:

  • Private offices
  • Nursing homes
  • Spas
