What
is a personal trainer?
Personal training instructors instruct and coach
both groups and individuals in various exercises
and activities. They almost always work in physical
fitness facilities, health clubs and fitness centers. Mainly,
they work within the health and recreation services
industry. Nearly five percent of personal trainers
are self-employed.
Personal trainers must obtain certification in the
fitness field before they can be employed. Many organizations
require candidates to have a high school diploma,
be certified in CPR and pass an exam that measures
knowledge of human physiology and proper exercise
techniques.
What do people in personal training do?
Personal trainers must be able to help their clients
assess their physical fitness level and encourage
and help them set and reach their fitness goals.
Typically personal training instructors spend their
time in an office planning programs and special events
doing their administrative work. Those who work in
smaller fitness centers may split their time among
the office, personal training and teaching classes.
Personal training instructors also:
- Motivating clients
and team members
- Assisting clients in breathing exercises
- Identifying
specific training needs
- Applying first aid procedures
- Leading various recreational
activities
- Monitoring and communicating client progress
- Demonstrating
each physical activity
