Being an electrician is not as simple as filling out an application and being hired unless you are already a certified electrician with some experience under your belt. Even if you have experience as an electrician, some companies will have you ride with another electrician until you learn how the company works and what they expect of their electricians. It also allows the new employee to gain insight into the types of jobs he will be doing and the type of customers with whom he will be working.

For the new electrician learning how to do the jobs that are required takes time and effort. It also means learning on the job and following the lead of the "teacher." No matter how much experience you may have before training as an apprentice electrician, you will find many things you didn't know before becoming fully educated. It's a learning experience for an apprentice electrician, and it takes time to learn everything that is necessary to perform all of the jobs that are required.

The biggest problem for an electrician, especially one that may have moved from another state, is learning the codes and ordinances of that state or municipality. Some codes may be similar, and even exactly the same, but others may be completely different. Before you can become licensed in another state, you have to pass a test and become certified in the electrical code in effect in that state.
