Healthcare Management Careers

Graduates of Healthcare Management school can expect excellent employment opportunities, particularly for those who have experience in the healthcare field.

Healthcare managers, who are also referred to as healthcare administrators and healthcare executives, are responsible for managing all or part of a healthcare facility. In large hospitals, for example, a healthcare manager may oversee only one department and will work together with several other healthcare managers in order to ensure the smooth operation of the facility. At a smaller clinic, on the other hand, one healthcare manager may be responsible for overseeing the entire facility.

The exact duties of a healthcare manager may vary according to his or her position. Some areas of specialization may include:

  • Clinical manager - creates and implements policies of a specific department, evaluates the performance of personnel and develops the budget for a specific department. Clinical managers often have medical experience that suits the department he or she is overseeing. For example, if the clinical manager is overseeing the physical therapy department, he or she will generally have experience or training in the field of physical therapy.
  • Health information manager - maintains patient records and makes certain they are securely stored, which requires remaining current on the latest government rules and regulations as well as on how to use current software technology.
  • Group medical practice manager - works with a group of physicians and handles business affairs such as budgeting, billing, personnel matters and patient flow.

Healthcare managers work within an office setting, but are frequently required to travel in order to attend meetings. Since most healthcare facilities offer 24 hour care, healthcare managers must also be on call in order to address problems as they may occur. Those who are willing to put in the hours, however, can enjoy significant advancement opportunities, including the opportunity to become the CEO of a medical facility.
